This smoothie meets the meticulous requirements of a true ketogenic smoothie, with the correct ratios of energy coming from fats, carbs and protein.
When I was developing the Keto Smoothie Booster Blend, I looked around and was shocked to see how many smoothie recipes on the web claimed to be “keto” that were far from it.
If you’re seeking to stay in ketosis, this is the smoothie for you.
For a full explanation of the ins and outs of this smoothie, check out this video. I plan to record a more succinct version soon.
On a keto diet, it’s vital to ensure you’re getting enough fibre, and this smoothie provides a whopping ~20g of a 35g/day target!
Fermenting your smoothie is the magic trick to being able to enjoy all your favourite summery tropical fruits, while still staying in ketosis.
I know, it sounds gross. I promise, it’s not.
It’s not scary, just new and not as sweet, with a mild sour tang which you can offset with a sweetener of your choice if you like.
The fermenting process sucks the sugars out of the fruit, and replaces them with probiotics. Pretty cool, huh?
It also all but eliminates the carbs, leaving all the goodness and fibre behind.
Option 1: Ferment the whole smoothie
Throw ingredients into the blender the night before (ensuring the liquid covers the solids) and leave covered on the bench overnight. In the morning, whizz up with ice.
Option 2: Ferment fruit only (my personal preference)
I like this option because it means I have a freezer full of frozen tropical fruits at my disposal at all times. I prefer the smoothie blended with frozen fruit rather than room temperature fruit with ice added.
To ferment your fruit ahead of time, just cover your fruit with half Coconut Water Kefir half Water and leave overnight before draining and freezing.
Add the pre-fermented frozen fruit to your smoothie.
If following Option 2, you don’t need to add the 1/2 cup of Coconut Water Kefir to your smoothie. Replace it with plain water.
I adore Kultured Wellness’ Coconut Water Kefir which you can order here.
Any questions, sing out in the comments!
Enjoy those tropical fruits again my friends 🙂
